Effect of detergent, Linear Alkyl benzene sulphonate on gills of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium lamarrei

Abstract

Present paper deals with effect of detergent, Linear Alkyl benzene sulphonate on gills of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium lamarrei. Prawns were exposed to 0.755mg/L(25%of 96hLC ) of detergent for 10, 20 and 30 days showed effects on gills mainly, inflammation, distension, excessive mucous secretion, erosion of cuticle, necrosis, hyperplasia, reduction of interlameller space, heavy influx of haemocytes etc. Degenerative changes, loss of histoarchitecture, deformed haemocytes alongwith nuclear pyknosis and Karyorrhexis were observed after 30days of exposure. Severity of effects was found duration dependent. Possible mechanism of detergent toxicity has also been discussed.
